Supporting French-speaking refugees

French-English reference guide by Amyleigh, Emma, Ellie, Laura, Eleanor, Sophie, Becky, Bryony and Lauren

8R1 has been taking part, along with students at Dereham Northgate, Broadland and Litcham High Schools, in a project supported by Links into Languages.

The idea is that an outside ‘client’ should commission a project requiring the use of the foreign language, which is then delivered by students. Through this project, the schools involved can analyse to what extent their curriculum is supportive of student creativity and independence.

With the help of Monsieur Adolphe, a regular guest, volunteer and representative of the Congolese community, the Year 8 students developed a questionnaire in French to find out what kind of information French-speaking people would have found most helpful on arrival in Norwich.

Following the results of this survey, students worked in groups to develop four resources for people arriving to Norwich: a French-English phrasebook, and guides to medical services, free-time activities and churches in the city.

The most finished ‘product’ was the phrasebook created by Amyleigh, Emma, Ellie, Laura, Eleanor, Sophie, Becky, Bryony and Lauren. Félicitations, les filles! The book has been printed for distribution to people learning English in Norwich via the Red Cross and other groups. If you would like a copy, you can download it here (pdf).
